Janis Joplin - Summertime

Rođena je 19. siječnja 1943. u Port Arthuru, Texas,
Janis je bila najznačajnija bjeloputa rock pjevačica.


Bila je povučena djevojčica i nije se voljela igrati s djecom iz susjedstva. Zbog svoje nesposobnosti da se uklopi i da ispuni očekivanja tamošnje konzervativne zajednice, Janis je već u ranoj mladosti doživjela brojne osobne traume, poteškoće i nesretnost koja će ju pratiti čitavog života.
U školi nije bila popularna i proglašavana je čudakinjom, koju nitko nikada nije pozvao na spoj. Kao tinejđerica, bila je povučena, a zadovoljstvo je nalazila u slikanju. Zabrinuta zbog kćerinog buntovnog ponašanja, Janisina majka odvela ju je kod psihijatra.
Psihijatar je tada upozorio majku da ukoliko njezina kćerka ne prestane s takvim zlim ponašanjem, do svoje će 21 godine ili potpuno poluditi ili biti mrtva. Na njezin 25. rođendan majka joj je poslala razglednicu s riječima 'čestitam'.

Nakon završetka srednje škole, Janis Joplin 1960. godine odlazi na fakultet 'University Of Texas' u Austinu, no nikada nije dogurala do diplome. Tijekom studiranja živjela je po raznim komunama, te u zgradi poznatoj pod imenom 'The Ghetto', koja je bila smještena na adresi 2812 Nueces Street, a stanarina je bila samo 40 dolara na mjesec.
Janis je novac zarađivala pjevajući u lokalnim barovima. No priča koja će se zauvijek povezivati uz njezine studentske dane je ona iz 1962. godine, kada je pobijedila u izboru za najružnijeg muškarca na fakultetu, što je objavljeno i u školskim novinama 'Ranger'.
U to vrijeme Janis je sve više počela pokazivati znakove buntovnosti, tada nazivano i liberalizmom, a svoje je uzore nalazila u ženskim blues heroinama i u poeziji.
1963. Janis odlazi s fakulteta, konačno napušta Texas i odlazi u San Francisco, gdje se najviše druži s gitaristom grupe Jefferson Airplane Jorma-om Kaukonenom.

Janis Joplin sve više počinje konzumirati drogu, a zbog svoje ljubavi prema narkoticima dobiva nadimak 'speed freak'. Osim heroina, kojeg tada tek počinje ozbiljnije uzimati, Janis je u to vrijeme već pila i velike količine alkohola, što se nastavilo sve do kraja njezinog života, pa je čak i dan danas kao njezin zaštitni znak ostao whiskey 'Južnjačka utjeha' (Southern Comfort).
1966. godine, San Francisco, Janis ulazi u rock bend Big Brother and The Holding Company.
Iako Janis do tada nije imala nikakvog iskustva u rock glazbi, njezin dolazak u grupu bio je pravi pogodak i bend je već tada počeo oko sebe okupljati sve veći broj hippie poklonika.

Janis i njezin bend na turnejama nastupaju zajedno s Jimi Hendrixom, Buddy Guyom, Joni Mitchell, Richie Havensom, Paulom Butterfieldom i Elvinom Bishopom na koncertu 'Wake for Martin Luther King Jr' u New Yorku.

Album 'Cheap Thrills' bilo je najznačajnije izdanje Janis Joplin i jedno od naj očekivanijih i najuspješnijih albuma 1968. godine. Janis i njezin bend bili su glavna vijest svih popularnih novina i radio emisija, jer se napokon radilo o materijalu koji je po svojoj snimci i produkciji bio zadovoljavajući za radio stanice, a zahvaljujući velikom izdavaču Columbia recordsu, ploča se mogla kupiti u svim dućanima.

Kad je album u kolovozu 1968. godine objavljen, završio je direktno na vrhovima svih ljestvica i ostvario je zlatnu nakladu, a pjesma 'Piece of My Heart' bila je Top 40 hit. Janis je postala nova rock ikona, jer nitko prije nje nije pjevao tako emotivno, tako očajnički i tako uporno i tako glasno kao Janis, koja je na albumu 'Cheap Thrills' otpjevala svoje najbolje vokalne dionice u životu. Prateći bend Big Brother nije joj bio ravan, no oni su svoje nedostatke nadopunjavali gitarističkim i psihodeličnim improvizacijama, karakterističnim za tadašnje bendove iz San Francisca.

Zadnji nastup Janis Joplin s grupom Big Brother and The Holding Company održala 1. prosinca 1968. godine.
Nakon odlaska iz grupe Big Brother and The Holding Company, Janis Joplin je oformila novi prateći bend po uzoru na klasične soul bandove i dala mu ime Kozmic Blues Band.
No,ubrzo je i njih napustila..
Novi bend koji se zvao The Full Tilt Boogie Band, a sastojao se od glazbenika iz Kanade.Iako je Janis sa svojom grupom zajedno bila tek nešto manje od tri mjeseca, njihovi nastupi pokazali su da je bend u super formi. Nažalost, zbog financijskih i drugih problema, turneja nije potrajala onoliko koliko se očekivalo, a pratili su ju i burni tulumi puni droge, alkohola i seksa. Jednom prilikom izvođači su zaustavili vlak kojim su putovali po Kanadi, samo zato što su ostali bez alkohola. Menađer Janisinog benda tada je izašao iz vlaka i u najbližoj trgovini pokupovao sav alkohol koji su imali, kako bi bendovi mogli nesmetano nastaviti sa svojim neprekidnim bančenjem.

Janis je bila poznata i kao nezasitna u seksu te je jednom prilikom imala čak 65 odnosa u samo pet dana turneje, a voljela se baciti u krevet odmah nakon nastupa. Jedan od njezinih ljubavnika opisao je kako bi parkirali njezinu prikolicu odmah uz stage, tako da može uskočiti unutra čim siđe s pozornice. Među njezinim ljubavnicima našli su se i Kris Kristofferson, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison i Joe Namath, za kojeg je sama rekla da ga je uništavala. S Morrisonom, predvodnikom Doorsa, bila je drugačija priča jer je on uvjek bio u gorem alkoholiziranom stanju i od nje same, tako mu je jednom prilikom Janis, iznervirana zbog njegovog konstantnog mrtvog pijanstva, razbila bocu Južnjačke utjehe na glavi dok je on samo tromo sjedio u svom automobilu.

Tijekom rujna 1970. godine Janis Joplin sa svojim novim bendom u Los Angelesu počinje snimati novi album s producentom Paulom A. Rothchildom, koji je bio poznat po radu s The Doorsima. Uvečer 3. listopada ona i njezin kolega iz benda Ken Pearson opijali su se u baru Barney's Beanery u Hollywoodu. Nedugo nakon ponoći vratili su se natrag u hotel Landmark u kojem su bili smješteni. U sobi 105 Janis si je ubrizgala svoju posljednju injekciju heroina. Vratila se u predvorje hotela kako bi razmijenila novčanicu od pet dolara kako bi na aparatu s kovanicama kupila cigarete. Izmijenila je nekoliko riječi s hotelskim blagajnikom koji je kasnije rekao kako je izgledala savršeno normalno, te da nije znao tko je ona. Kada se vratila u sobu, srušila se na pod pored kreveta, gotovo smrskavši nos. Privukla se uz noćni ormarić, s cigaretom u ruci i stražnjicom okrenutom prema gore u svojoj baby doll piđami. Sutradan, dok su ju čekali u studiju, John Cook, jedan od članova njezinog benda, zabrinuo se nakon što se nije javljala na telefon. Razvalo je vrata njezine sobe i našao ju mrtvu u tom položaju. Imala je 27 godina.

Janis Joplin- Try

U svojoj oporuci Janis je ostavila 1,500 dolara za tulum u povodu njezine smrti, odnosno da, kako je sama napisala 'moji prijatelji mogu održati zabavu nakon što mene više ne bude'. Tulum se zaista i održao 26. listopada u hotelu The Lion's Share u San Aselmo-u, a 200-tinjak njezinih prijatelja zabavljala je grupa The Grateful Dead.
Janis Joplin je umrla 4. listopada 1970., u dobi od 27 godina, a uzrok smrti bila je prevelika doza heroina i whiskeya. Janis je umrla usred snimanja svog novog albuma, no iza sebe je ostavila ipak dovoljno snimljenog materijala da se može završiti čitava ploča. Primjerice posljednja pjesma koju je snimila bila je pjesma 'Mercedes Benz', a uključena je na album iako je snimljena samo jednom, iz prvog pokušaja, a pjesma 'Buried Alive In The Blues', za koju je Janis trebala snimiti vokal na dan svoje smrti, ostavljena je kao takva i objavljena je kao instrumental. Konačni rezultat bio je album 'Pearl', objavljen posthumno 1971. godine, tri mjeseca nakon njezine smrti. Album je dobio ime po nadimku koji su Janis dali njezini prijatelji hippiji i bio je to najprodavaniji album u njezinoj kratkoj karijeri te je sadržavao i njezine najveće hitove, kao i konačnu verziju pjesme Krisa Kristoffersona 'Me and Bobby McGee'. Ta je pjesma postala i Janisin posthumni broj jedan i jedna od pjesama po kojoj se Janis Joplin danas najčešće prepoznaje.

Janis Joplin je kremirana na groblju Westwood Village Memorial Park u Westwoodu u Kaliforniji, a njezin je pepeo prosut u Tihi ocean na plaži Stinson Beach u Marin Countyu.

Janis Joplin ostala je zapamćena po svom snažnom i prepoznatljivom, visokom i hrapavom vokalu, kojim je izvodila soft folk i jazz i blues pjesme karakteristične za mnoge bijele glazbenike tog vremena. Uz Grace Slick iz grupe Jefferson Airplane, Janis je bila pionir jednog potpuno novog načina izražavanja za bijele žene u svijetu rocka, u kojem su prije nje dominirali isključivo muškarci. Značajno je također da je u jako kratkom vremenu Janis prerasla iz uloge tek ženske pjevačice u muškom bendu, do međunarodne pjevačke solo zvijezde, a sve samo zahvaljujući svojem iznimnom talentu. Janis je također bila jedna od rijetkih ženskih izvođača iz onog vremena koja je redovito nosila hlače umjesto tada uobičajenih suknji i haljina.

Svoje je tijelo ukrašavala s brojnim narukvicama i lančićima, a njezina tetovaža malenog srca na lijevoj strani prsa, koju je za nju izradio tattoo artist Lyle Tuttle iz San Francisca, smatra se začetkom tattoo revolucije i buđenjem te popularne kulture i prihvaćanja tattooa kao umjetnosti. Jedna od njezinih prepoznatljivosti bila je i njezina nemarna duga kosa, često različito obojana po pramenovima, a glavu je također ukrašavala i raznim maramama, šalovima i perjem, što se kosilo s tada uobičajenim trajnim i čvrstim frizurama i perikama koje su nosile glazbenice tog doba. Također je značajno da je Janis Joplin bila vjerojatno jedina rock glazbenica koja se nikada nije šminkala — što je također jedna od stvari potpuno neuobičajena za žene iz onog vremena. Janis Joplin živjela je u hippie svijetu koji se vrtio u 'ringišpilu' droga, alkohola i promiskuitetnih i nesretnih ljubavnih veza. Ipak, za razliku od čitave tadašnje hippie scene, Janis nikada nije previše voljela halucinogene droge kao što je bio tada jako popularni LSD. Njezin je najveći prijatelj bila boca whiskeya 'Južnjačke utjehe', prije nego što je otkrila heroin, koji ju je 1970. godine stajao života.

Njezin najveći životni uzor i idol bila je blues pjevačica Bessie Smith. Kada je Janis doznala da je Bessie pokopana u neoznačenom grobu, platila je postavljanje nadgrobnog spomenika, na kojem je pisalo 'Najveća blues pjevačica na svijetu nikada neće prestati pjevati'.

Američki glazbenik. Lider, gitarist i pjevač grupe Nirvana, koja je obilježila devedesete.
Takozvani "Glasnogovornik generacije".
Rođen je u Aberdeenu, Seattle.
Roditelji mu se razvode 1976., što ga je jako pogodilo.
Nakon razvoda neprekidno se seli od roditelja do raznih rođaka.

Kao mali, Kurt je bio hiperaktivan i roditelji su ga smirivali raznim teškim lijekovima što je vjerojatno loše utjecalo na njegovu psihu.
Sa 16 godina je završio na ulici.
Iz tog razdoblja potječe pjesma "Something In The Way". Krista Novoselica upoznaje 1986. i s njim osniva grupu Nirvana.

Prvi album "Bleach" snimaju 1989. za neovisnu tvrtku SubPop, a 1991. za David Geffen Records snimaju drugi album, "Nevermind" koji ih dovodi na vrh popularnosti, ponajviše zahvaljujući antihimnom "Smells Like Teen Spirit" koja će promjeniti povijest glazbe.

Primjerice tv postaja VH1 blok glazbe devedesetih naziva "Smells like the 90's". Nitko nikad nije otkrio o čemu je zapravo Kurt pjevao u "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Kurt se 1992. ženi s Courtney Love,i dobiva kćer Frances Bean, ali nakon albuma "Incesticide" i "In Utero" Cobaina nalaze mrtvog pored ispaljene sačmarice u njegovu domu u Seattleu 8. travnja 1994.U krvi je imao dozu heroina koja je bila dovoljna za tri overdosea, zbog toga još nije utvrđeno kako je u takvom stanju mogao uzeti sačmu. Kremiran je i njegov je pepeo rasut po rijeci Wishkah.

Govoreći jezikom iskusne budale koja bi očito radije bila ponižena, djetinjasta, tužna, ova bi poruka trebala biti prilično jasna. Sva upozorenja, od mog upoznavanja sa etikama zajedno sa nezavisnošću i zagrljajem vaše zajednice, su se pokazala veoma istinitim.
Ja nisam osjećao toliko uzbuđenje slušajući glazbu koliko stavrajući je i pišući je toliko godina.
Osjećam se krivim radi ovih riječi, npr. kada se povučemo s pozornice i pogase se svjetla i kada me masa ljudi zove na bis, to me ne pogađa na isti način kao i Freddyja Mercurija koji je, tako se činilo, volio biti obožavan i voljen od te iste mase ljudi, što je nešto što ja jako cijenim i za čime čeznem.
Ja ne mogu od vas napraviti budalu, nikoga od vas, jednostavno nije fer za vas i za mene.

Najgori čin, koji ja mogu zamisliti, bio bi varajući guliti ljude i folirati da imam 100% zabavu.
Ponekad osjećam da bi se trebao osvijestiti prije nego što izađem na binu.
Ja sam pokušao uraditi sve što je u mojoj moći, jesam, Bože, vjeruj mi da jesam, ali to nije dovoljno.
Ja poštujem činjenicu da sam utijecao na mnoge ljude.
Ja mora da sam jedan od onih narcisoidnih ljudi koji poštuju stvari tek onda kad one nestanu. Ja sam preosjetljiv.
Ja bih morao biti lijena osoba koja potcjenjuje a da bih dobio zanos za sve ljude koje osobno znam i za fanove Nirvanine glazbe.
Svi mi imamo nešto dobro u sebi, i ja mislim da jednostavno previše volim ljude, ali ja jednostavno ne mogu preći preko frustracija, osjećaja krivnje i empatije koju osjećam prema svakom, tako je osjećam da me čini jebeno tužnim.

Malog tužnog, osjetljivog, nepoštovanog čovjeka, Isuse, čovjeka!!! Zašto jednostavno ne možeš uživati?
Ne znam, imam poštovanje žene sa slatkim ambicijama i moje kćerke koja me toliko podsjeća na ono što sam ja nekad bio: pun ljubavi i uživanja, prolazeći mirno pored svake osobe misleći da je svatko dobar i da me neće povrijediti. To me muči do neke granice koju ne mogu zamisliti. Ne mogu podnijeti misao da Frances postane samouništivi roker koji će se ubiti kao što sam ja postao.
Ja sam velik, ali od moje sedme godine ja sam postao mrzovoljan prema svima uopće. Samo zbog toga jer se činilo previše lako za ljude da budu zajedno i da budu empatični.

Empatija! Samo zbog toga jer je previše volim i osjećam se žalosno za ljude.
Hvala svima za zabrinutost i pisma tokom ovih godina.

Chuck Shuldiner guitar Solo


Chuck Schuldiner was the singer, songwriter, and rhythm and lead guitarist of the band Death, which he founded in 1983, initially under the name Mantas.
He is often referred to as "The Father of Death Metal", and his obituary in the January 5, 2002 issue of UK's Kerrang magazine stated that "Chuck Schuldiner was one of the most significant figures in the history of metal.
Schuldiner himself was modest about his part in the history of death metal, noting "I don’t think I should take the credits for this death metal stuff.
I’m just a guy from a band, and I think Death is a metal band.


Biography

Early life
Chuck Schuldiner was born on May 13, 1967 on Long Island, New York to a Jewish father of Austrian descent and a mother from the American South, a convert to Judaism; both his parents were teachers. In 1968, his family moved to Florida.
Schuldiner was the youngest of three children. He had an older brother named Frank and an older sister named Bethann.

Schuldiner started playing guitar at the age of 9. His 16 year old brother had just been killed in an accident and his parents bought him a guitar, thinking it would help with his grief. He took classical lessons for less than a year in which his teacher taught him "Mary had a little Lamb", which he didn't like very much, and almost stopped completely, until his parents saw an electric guitar at a yard sale and bought it for him. The young Schuldiner immediately took to the instrument.
After getting amps, he never stopped playing, writing and teaching himself. Schuldiner was known to spend the weekend in the garage or his room playing his guitar, but was limited to three hours on weekdays when school was in session. Schuldiner first played in public in his early teens.

Schuldiner was originally inspired by Iron Maiden, KKiss and Billy Idol, among others.
He was particularly interested in the metal movement known as NWOBHM and cited bands of that genre among his favorites,
He frequently cited French band Sortilège as his personal favorite metal group.
Slayer, Possessed, Mercyful Fate/King Diamond and Metallica were later influences he would apply more to his own band.
Later in his career Schuldiner cited progressive metal bands such as Watchtower and Queensrÿche frequently as influences.
Chuck's mother claims that he enjoyed all forms of music except country and rap. He also apparently particularly enjoyed jazz and classical music in addition to metal and British alternative acts such as Lush.

Although Schuldiner apparently did do well in school, it bored him and he eventually dropped out. He did regret this later, however.

Schuldiner was not afraid to take on controversial lyrical subjects such as the anti-drug sentiments of "Living Monstrosity" and discussion with those who choose abortion in "Altering the Future".


Musical career
Schuldiner formed Death as Mantas in 1983. Original members were Schuldiner (guitar), Rick Rozz (guitar) and Kam Lee (drums and vocals). In January 1986, Schuldiner moved to Toronto and temporarily joined the Canadian band Slaughter on guitar.
However, he quickly returned to continue the formation of Death.

There were several lineup changes, however with Chris Reifert he eventually released his first Death album, titled Scream Bloody Gore, in 1987. He continued with 1988's Leprosy with the line-up of former Mantas guitarist Rick Rozz and rhythm section Terry Butler on bass and Bill Andrews on drums, and 1990s Spiritual Healing, where guitarist James Murphy had replaced the fired Rozz.

After Spiritual Healing, Schuldiner stopped working with full time band members and instead worked only with studio and live venue musicians due to bad relationships with Death's previous rhythm section and guitarists. This earned Schuldiner something of a 'perfectionist' reputation in the metal community. Schuldiner had also fired his manager Eric Greif but re-hired him before the recording of his next, influential release.

Death's breakthrough album, Human saw the band evolving to a more technical and progressive style, in which Schuldiner displayed his guitar skills more than ever. He continued in this style (and continued the success of the band) with 1993s Individual Thought Patterns, 1995s Symbolic, and finally The Sound of Perseverance in 1998.

Schuldiner played guitar in the project Voodoocult on the album Jesus Killing Machine in 1994. He folded Death after this to form a new band called Control Denied, and released The Fragile Art of Existence in 1999. Schuldiner was also asked to be one of the many guest vocalists on Dave Grohl's 2001 Probot project by Grohl himself. Grohl even campaigned to raise funds to help Schuldiner pay medical bills for the brain cancer that would eventually take his life. Schuldiner succumbed to the disease before any collaboration could happen.
Grohl, in tears, in an interview over Schuldiner's death, said that "Chuck died for making the right decisions in life.
That's just... that's just not fair."


Battle with cancer

In May 1999, Schuldiner experienced pain in his upper neck, which he initially thought was a pinched nerve. He consulted with a chiropractor followed by a massage therapist/acupuncturist who recommended an MRI Exam. He was correct about the pinched nerve; unfortunately, it was being caused by a tumor. On his birthday, May 13, 1999, Schuldiner was diagnosed with pontine glioma, a type of brain cancer that invades the brain stem and immediately underwent radiation therapy.

In October 1999, Schuldiner’s family announced that the tumor had necrotized and that he was on the way to recovery.
In January 2000, Schuldiner underwent surgery to remove what remained of his tumor. The operation was a success; however, the Schuldiner family was struggling financially. The total costs of the operations would come to $70,000, a price the Schuldiner family could not afford.
Many fundraisers, auctions, and benefit concerts took place to help cover the costs. The money began to come in as the metal community, in total shock, realized that Schuldiner's life was in danger.
The metal community and the Schuldiner family showed deep concern because Schuldiner could lose his life due to lack of funds.
The doctors who removed his tumor called the original diagnosis of pontine glioma a misdiagnosis.

Schuldiner continued to work on his music, continuing his work with Control Denied. About two years after his original diagnosis, in May 2001, the cancer returned and Schuldiner fell ill again. He was originally denied surgery (which he needed immediately) due to lack of funds.
A press release called for support from everyone, including fellow artists.
Jane Schuldiner urged all who read the statements about Schuldiner and his illness to go out and get insurance, showing her frustration in the American system.
Schuldiner had gotten medical insurance after his first surgery, but the insurer had refused to pay because the tumor existed before he had gotten the insurance. Many artists, including Kid Rock, Korn and Red Hot Chili Peppers, got together in Summer 2001 to auction off personal items with the funds assisting Schuldiner's medical expenses. This was covered by MTV.
Schuldiner received a chemotherapy drug called vincristine to help with his therapy.
Like most drugs used in the treatment of cancer, the side effects were harsh and weakened Chuck greatly. Undaunted, Schuldiner fought on. In late October/early November, Schuldiner became ill with pneumonia. He died on December 13, 2001, at approximately 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

Legacy
His mother, Jane Schuldiner, handles his legacy. She frequently interacts with Schuldiner's fans and has stated many times that she enjoys his music. Schuldiner's sister Beth seems to keep track of his recordings. Beth has a son named Christopher, who also plays guitar and has all of Schuldiner's guitars except his first one, which his mother keeps. BC Rich also released a statement in their 2008 catalog stating that Chuck's signature model Stealth will be available for purchase.

Although Schuldiner never married or had children, he dated a woman named Kim Robinson for several years.
They had a home and two dogs in Altamonte Springs just outside of Orlando. Schuldiner built a studio inside the garage where many of his songs such as Crystal Mountain were inspired.
Their home office was the site of the Metal Crusade newsletter and fan club that they ran together under the pseudo name, Dan Robinson.
She also never married after his death.

Despite his passing, his legacy lives on through his fans and his recordings. However, a legal battle is in progress on the settlement of the rights to the partially completed second Control Denied album. Parts of these incomplete recordings were released in the Zero Tolerance two-part compilation of Death's early demos.

Tribute concerts commonly occur to this day for his legacy, often coordinated or funded by his mother and family (the most recent was in December 2007). Most recently, former Death guitarist (and brain cancer survivor) James Murphy announced he will release a Chuck Schuldiner tribute album to commemorate his lasting mark on the metal community. Chuck's family is also offering support for Murphy's effort.


Beliefs
Chuck once described himself as "a lover of life", "friendship", and "animals".
"I would like to live forever, if it was possible", he once said in an interview.
He commonly spoke out against artists who were "out of control", garnering negative attention to the death metal scene.
Chuck openly condemned and disavowed stereotypes of metal musicians as being harmful to animals, people, or being "anti-life".

When asked about his opinions regarding an afterlife, Chuck responded "I don't know", but elaborated that he believed "this is hell", and that demons are in people, as they "create evil".
Although his parents are both Jewish, Schuldiner did not go through any formal religious training. In the documentary, "666 At Calling Death", he was asked whether Satanism was a part of his music. He replied, "Not at all. I really don't want to involve any type of religious theme in our music. I think that's more of a personal thing. Yeah, I'm not a Satanist and I definitely don't put that into our music. No purpose. I was really young when the band first started out. I was never really into writing Satanic lyrics at all, personally. We did write gore lyrics, but it was more like kind of tongue-in-cheek, horror-movie type level.
Nothing like encouraging, people to go out and hurt themselves or anything stupid like that. It's pure fantasy-movie type, scary stuff. And then, I just really got into writing about reality, which is what we all have to deal with.

Schuldiner designed the Death logo and its various incarnations during the length of his career. In 1991, before the release of Human, he cleaned up the logo taking out more intricate details and the "T" in the logo was swapped from an inverted Cross to a more regular looking "T", one reason being to quash any implication of religion.

Equipment
Schuldiner's primary guitar throughout most of his career was the B.C. Rich Stealth model, an extremely rare model available only through the BC Rich custom shop until 2008, when it was released to the public. Prior to this, he used a BC Rich Mockingbird. Most of Schuldiner's sound came from a DiMarzio X2N pickup placed in the bridge. During the (In) Human Tour of the World (1991-92), Schuldiner briefly endorsed a small Wisconsin custom guitar company called Axtra, who worked with him on designs, though he still insisted on using his BC Rich during filming of the Lack of Comprehension video in September 1991 in Orlando.

The amp he used towards the end of his career was a Marshall Valvestate (Model 8100) amp head and Valvestate 4x12 speaker cabinets on Individual Thought Patterns as well as the ITP tour, and eventually started using Marshall 1960 cabs. Before that he used various equipment including Randall Amps and cabinets, and on the (In) Human Tour of the World he used a small GK 250ML miked up, despite having hollow 4x12 stacks 'for show'.



Playing Style
Schuldiner is known for his unique playing style. Techniques most frequently utilized by Schuldiner included his extremely fast and accurate alternate picking technique and his somewhat off-the-wall legato style. Schuldiner did occasionally utilize techniques such as sweep picking and string skipping as well, and he was an accomplished two hand tapper (as evidenced by the tap intro to "The Philosopher").
He also utilized vibratos a lot later in his career.

Contrary to what many assumed, Schuldiner was in fact not well schooled in musical theory. He found "playing by ear" to be a more effective and advisable method. Schuldiner did "make up" his own scales and modes (many of which ended up being real scales, such as harmonic minor and melodic minor) which Schuldiner frequently utilized in his solos, a testament to his excellent ear.
This also led him to create his odd fingering positions which very much defined his style.

Schuldiner tended to use more theorized guitarists for his counterparts in Death, including James Murphy, Paul Masvidal, Andy LaRocque, Bobby Koelbe and Shannon Hamm, this made an interesting contrast between his more unconventional style. Arguably the guitarist Schuldiner clicked best with was Shannon Hamm, as on his work with him on Deaths Sound of Perseverance as well as on Control Denied's The Fragile Art of Existence, there were many harmonies and naturally layered guitar lines between the two.

At one point, Schuldiner played lead, rhythm and bass guitars on recording sessions, and according to Gene Hoglan, Schuldiner "was a killer drum programmer too!", as stated on the recent re-release of 1995's Symbolic
